June Slow Food Potluck “on the farm”
Native Earth Teaching Farm, North Road in Chilmark
Tour Native Earth Teaching Farm and gardens and enjoy a Slow Food-sponsored potluck dinner outside on a beautiful June evening on Sunday, June 13, from 4 to 8.
“One of our goals at Slow Food is the support of Vineyard farms and local food producers, and we’re very happy to have this outdoor event at Native Earth farm,” says Cathy Walthers, president of Slow Food Martha’s Vineyard.
The public is welcome to attend — bring your whole family. There will be a bonfire, music, and a tour for kids led by MV Kidz. Rebecca Gilbert will speak about her farm as well as the Ark of Taste, a Slow Food International initiative that identifies and promotes foods in danger of extinction. Bring a potluck dish (show off what’s growing in your garden) to share. There will be a grill going as well if you want to “grill” your potluck contribution.
Native Earth Teaching Farm is a small working farm on North Road in Chilmark. On the farm, Randy Ben David and Rebecca raise “the best tasting and healthiest foods they possibly can” and have a seasonal farmstand and sell local vegetables, eggs, pork, chicken, guinea fowl and duck. As the teaching farm, they are open to the public part time year-round for educational and recreational purposes, offering tours, and many children’s events. They have a community garden plot open to the public. You can check out their website at Nativeearthteachingfarm.org.
This will be a “zero waste” (i.e. zero trash — carry in, carry out) event: PLEASE bring your own place setting and drinks. There will be a donation of $5 for the event. For additional information, contact us at SlowFoodVineyard@gmail.com. Rain date for the event: the next day, Monday, June 14, from 5 to 8.
